MSc in Analytical Chemistry
Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

 

Program Objectives

The MSc in program in Analytical Chemistry aims to prepare bachelor’s degree holders from the Chemical and Physical Sciences discipline for employment and career in analytical laboratory. The areas of study range from materials and forensic testing to environmental sampling and food quality control. By focusing on both the background principles of modern analysis techniques and emphasis on analytical problems applied to the real-world, the program provides students with significant advantage in the job market.

The program covers key aspects of modern analysis methods with clear explanation on the physical principles behind the techniques and numerous examples showing how the techniques apply to a wide range of analytical problems. It also contains modules for extensive experimental hands-on experience including both a laboratory-based course and an individual or group project. Safety training, risk assessment and laboratory management skills are also included in the study.

 

PILOs

Upon successful completion of the program, students should be able to:

  1. Appraising the appropriate and safe application of a wide range of modern analytical techniques to diverse fields from forensics and pharmaceuticals to the environmental and materials sciences, based on detailed knowledge of their working principles.
  2. Solving practical analytical problems by selection of the most appropriate available technique and either adapt or extend existing methodologies to new systems, obtaining reliable results, through appropriate calibration and data processing.
  3. Critically analyzing and reporting scientific data, highlighting their significance and giving numerical results with appropriate uncertainties from statistical observations, after minimizing possible sources of systematic error.
  4. Executing modern laboratory best practices, with a view to emphasizing safety, minimizing hazardous waste, and incorporating risk assessment exercises for projects and individual experiments, and, where appropriate, identifying legal issues and compliance with any relevant regulations.

MSc in Biotechnology
Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

 

Program Objectives

The MSc in Biotechnology program provides rigorous training to students for professional career development in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.  The program enriches students with various basic and advanced biotechnological elements, including pharmaceutical, analytical, transgenic and recombinant technology, bioprocessing, business operations and management.  All these elements are unique for preparing our students to become scientific research leaders and entrepreneurs in emerging bio-industrial areas.  With this training and exposure, graduates from the Program will be able to initiate innovative solutions in biotechnology and rapidly advance their careers.

 

PILOs

Upon successful completion of the program, students should be able to:

1. Explain in-depth and up-to-date knowledge in basic and advanced biotechnological elements.
2. Evaluate information relevant to concepts and issues of contemporary biotechnology.
3. Apply functional knowledge to solve problems in both academic and applied level in the field of research and technical aspect of biotechnology industry.
4. Demonstrate understanding in legal, ethical, social and business aspects of biotechnology-based products and services.
5. Perform independent and/or collaborative work effectively in teams and partnerships to accomplish laboratory-based or problem-based tasks.

MSc in Environmental Health and Safety
Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

 

Program Objectives

The MSc in Environmental Health and Safety program nurtures professionals with expertise/skills in key areas of environmental health and safety including pollution monitoring and control, hazard identification and risk assessment, food safety control, and pharmacology, toxicology and health, and to meet the increasing demands in industry, education, government or commercial sectors in Hong Kong and the region.

 

PILOs
Upon successful completion of the program, students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced knowledge from a variety of environmental/health related science disciplines to view environmental health in an integrated approach to improve health protection.
  2. Evaluate the impact of environmental stress on the health and safety of nature (ecosystems), as well as on the physical health and social well-being of humans.
  3. Analyze contemporary environmental health and safety issues in a local and regional context.
  4. Develop strategies and solutions for tackling environmental problems through class activities, seminars and site visits at government and/ or private sectors.

MSc in Mathematics for Educators
Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

 

Program Objectives

The MSc in Mathematics for Educators (MAED) is to enrich a mathematics educator’s knowledge of mathematics. It will particularly benefit teachers in secondary schools and tutorial educational institutions. The degree is meant to allow these teachers to enhance their mathematical knowledge and teaching skills with the dual benefit of: (i) Career advancement facilitation of the individual, and (ii) Better teachers for society.

 

PILOs

Upon successful completion of the program, students should be able to:

  1. Explain fundamental notions that underline the main areas of pure and applied mathematics and statistics.
  2. Explain the role of proof in mathematics.
  3. Explain examples of important applications of mathematics.
  4. Explain to secondary school students the connection between the basic mathematics taught in secondary schools and more advanced mathematics.
  5. Use problem solving pedagogically as a way to increase student understanding and engagement in secondary schools.
  6. Independently investigate additional areas of mathematics and its applications.

MSc in Financial Mathematics
Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

 

Program Objectives

The MSc in Financial Mathematics program prepares students with Science or Engineering backgrounds for rewarding careers in the financial industries.  Graduates from this program would fit jobs related to financial product development and pricing (e.g. customized derivatives and insurance contracts), investment decision making and fund management (e.g. asset allocation, portfolio selection), risk management (e.g. risk measurement, stress testing, hedging risk exposure in Forex, and interest rates).

 

PILOs

Upon successful completion of the program, students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced knowledge in probability, statistics, stochastic calculus and numerical methods for financial applications.
  2. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the financial securities as well as practical aspects of risk management.
  3. Construct quantitative models for derivative pricing, quantitative trading strategies, risk management, and scenario simulations.
  4. Communicate effectively with potential clients and peers.
